Game One Box
Staten Island, NY - Junior Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) took the first pitch she saw leading off the bottom of the eighth inning in game two over the fence left to give the Wagner softball team a 5-4 win and a sweep of Mount St. Mary's. The Seahawks won the first game 5-0 behind senior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) school 15th career shutout. The wins improved Wagner to 7-3 in the Northeast Conference and 17-15 overall as the Mount fell to 3-9 NEC and 9-25 overall.
In the opener, Miller (8-6), who has three shutouts this season, surpassed the previous career mark of 14 held by Krystle Petty (2000-03). The Las Vegas, NV product allowed just five hits while posting five strikeouts.
In the night cap, freshman Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) set another school record with 16 strikeouts. Eshelman threw 7 1/3 innings allowing four runs on seven hits and recorded 16 of 22 outs by the way of the strikeout, twice retiring the side in order and ringing up the final six hitters she faced.
In game one, junior Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) gave Wagner a 1-0 lead in the second with a RBI double down the right field line. Batistelli drove in sophomore Andrea Lazzari Reno, NV / Wooster) who drew a leadoff walk to start the inning.
The Seahawks extend the lead as they went deep in the third. Eshelman led off the at bat with a solo home run to right, her second of the season. Grad student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) followed later in the inning with her 10th career homer, a two run shot that put Wagner up 4-0.
Lazzari joined the party in the fifth inning leading off the stanza with a solo home run into left, her second of the year.
Mount St. Mary's best opportunity to score came in the sixth as the first two runners reach and moved to second and third with one out on a wild pitch. Miller then retired the final two outs on a grounder to short and a fly to right to preserve the shutout. Jamie Fowler, who went the first three innings, was given the loss for the Mount.
Eshelman entered game two having thrown three straight shutouts against NEC competition, but freshman Lisa Curreri led off the game with her first career home run as Mount took a 1-0 lead.
Iwicki tied the game in the fourth for the Seahawks with a sacrifice fly into center. Batistelli led off the inning with a double to right center and moved to third on a single by Gallagher.
The Mount went back on top in the fifth scoring three runs on three hits to go on top 4-1. Ashley Monsour brought in the first run when she was hit by pitch with the bases loaded and two outs. The next batter, Ashley Ladato followed with a two run single up the middle before Eshelman finally ended the inning with a strikeout.
The Seahawks closed to with in a run in the fifth, bringing in two runs with just one hits in the inning. Senior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) set the table reaching on a leadoff error and Eshelman ensued with a double to right center. A walk and a fly out kept the bases loaded for Batistelli, who recorded the first RBI of the inning when she was hit by a pitch for the NCAA leading 29th time this season. Gallagher came after with a RBI groundout to first which left Wagner down 4-3.
Back to back doubles by Wooster High School teammates Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) and Lazzari tied the game in the bottom of the seventh for the Seahawks. Stevens, a junior, dropped a one out double over the left fielders head and came around to score when Lazzari belted one inside the left field line.
After striking out the first batter of the eighth inning, Eshelman gave way to Miller, who gave up a seeing-eye single through the left side to Lodato. Miller then closed out the inning when she turned a come back grounder from Reanna Tuczynski into a 1-6-3 double play. Iwicki delivered with her second home run of the year in the bottom of the inning sending the Seahawks to their fifth straight victory. Tuczynski was tagged with the loss for Mount St. Mary's in a complete game effort.
Stevens, Iwicki, Batistelli, and Eshelman all had three hits on the day for Wagner.
Wagner squares off against Monmouth tomorrow in a 12:00 pm start.
