Staten Island, NY - Wagner junior Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) hit three home runs and had seven RBI as the Seahawks swept a softball double header from Yale by scores of 8-1 and 7-5 (5) today. The non-league wins improve the Seahawks to 15-15 overall while the Bulldogs fell to 18-14 for the season. Batistelli went 4-4 with three runs scored and the seven RBI which give the third year catcher 91 for her career, making her the Seahawks all-time leader as she passed former player Kimberly Bucker's (2002-05) previous mark of 88.
In the opener, Yale went up 1-0 on a two-out run scoring double from Megan Enyart in the top of the first. The Seahawks came right back in their half of the inning scoring four runs to gain the lead. Walks to senior Natalie Stephens (Jackson, NJ / Jackson) and freshman Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) started the inning and a wild pitch moved Stephens up to third. The 1-2 hitters then executed a perfect double steal which brought Stephens home to score. Another walk to junior Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) put two runners on for Batistelli who delivered with her first long ball of the day. Batistelli's high fly was her fourth of the year and marked the Seahawks only hit in the four run inning.
Batistelli was at it again in the third with a RBI single to right center which brought in sophomore Andrea Lazzari Reno, NV / Wooster) who singled and moved up to second to lead off the inning.
The Seahawks went to the long ball in the fifth inning getting solo home runs from Stevens, Batistelli, and grad student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) as the lead grew to 8-1.
Senior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) earned the win improving to 6-6 in the circle. Miller allowed six hits and just the single run in the first inning as she became the first Wagner player to record 50 wins in a career. Holly Gutterland
As they did in the first game the Bulldogs once again took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first getting a sacrifice fly from Kyli Hanson after a leadoff triple from Ashley Sloan. Wagner had to wait until the third inning to gain the lead when two out RBI singles from Junior Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) and senior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) gave the Seahawks a 2-1 lead.
Yale went back up in the third inning scoring three runs on five hits to take a 4-2 lead. The Seahawks came right back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own, including a two run homer from Batistelli. Lazzari brought in the first run of the inning with a single up the middle that scored Eshelman who led off the frame with a double. Batistelli's home run, her third of the day and sixth of the season, followed Lazzari's RBI as Wagner took a 5-4 advantage.
The Seahawks added two more in the fourth as they went on top 7-4. Iwicki, who went 3-5 on the day, led off with her 11th double of the year and used her lighting speed to advance on two wild pitches for the first run. Later on freshman Lacey Santone (S. Plainfield, NJ / S. Plainfield) reached on a fielder's choice sacrifice RBI that scored Stephens, who also double in the inning. The game was then called after the fifth inning as darkness began to fall upon the Grymes Hill filed.
Picking up her first collegiate win on the mound was freshman Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley) (1-1) who came on in relief in the third and went the final 2 1/3 innings allowing just two hits and no walks. KR Ling (2-3) was on the losing end for the Bulldogs. Sloan had four hits and scored twice on the day for Yale.
Wagner returns to the Lower Athletic Field this weekend as they host Mount St. Mary's on Saturday and Monmouth on Sunday.
