Seahawks Lose Second-Straight One-Run Game 3-2

April 14, 2007

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - Mount St. Mary's (16-15; 6-2 NEC) completed a four-game sweep over Wagner (8-20; 3-5 NEC) with a 3-2 win in game two of today's doubleheader at Dr. Bill Willetts Field.

In defeat, freshman AJ Pirozzi (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) turned in one of his best outings of the year. Despite falling to 1-3 on the season he threw his first career complete game, striking out three while yielding just three runs over 7.0 innings of work. The three runs all came in the decisive third frame.

Wagner got things rolling in the first with one run. With one out senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) singled to right field. Sophomore Peter Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) then walked on four-straight pitches. Senior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) loaded the bases with a base hit to left field. DiGeronimo scooted home on the next play on an error by the catcher. The bases were loaded up again when freshman Vin Avella (Matawan, NJ / CBA) was hit by a pitch. However, the Seahawks were unable to capitalize as Mount St. Mary's starter Andrew Germuth induced an inning-ending double play.

The Seahawks got another run in the second inning. Freshman Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) singled with one out. Sophomore Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) then singled to right field. On the play McDonnell scored on an errant throw by the centerfielder while Drechsel moved up to second. The bases were then loaded for the second-straight inning when DiGeronimo was hit by a pitch and Delleani walked. However for the second-straight inning Germuth escaped further damage by retiring the next batter.

Down 2-0, Mount centerfielder Brandon Woods led off the third with a walk. He advanced third on consecutive groundouts before being brought home when Ivor Hodgeson singled to left field to cut the lead to 2-1. Josh Vittek then supplied the big hit, a two-run home run to right-center, to put Mount up for good at 3-2.

After yielding one run in the second, Germuth settled down allowing just three hits over the next four frames.

He retired the first two hitters in the seventh before running into trouble. Delleani was hit by a pitch and Mastrianni singled for the second time in the game before Avella walked on four pitches to load up the bases. Mike Matta was then summoned from the bullpen and closed out the Seahawks for the third time on the weekend by inducing a groundout to third base for his third save of the year.

Germuth improved to 4-4 on the season, striking out three in 6.2 innings of work.

The Seahawks out-hit Mount St. Mary's 8-5 but stranded 10 runners.

The Green & White will next be in action on Wednesday, April 18 when they host Seton Hall at 3:30 pm.
