Final Stats
Philadelphia, PA - Drexel University held the Wagner College women's lacrosse scoreless in the second half as they claimed a 16-5 victory earlier today at Vidas Field. The non-conference loss puts the Seahawks at 2-9 overall as the Dragons moved to 9-3 with the win.
Senior Jessica Ellis (Fairport, NY / Fairport), who led Wagner with two goals and an assist, gave Wagner its only lead of the game when she opened the scoring two minutes into the game. Ellis scored unassisted as the Seahawks went up 1-0 before four straight unanswered goals from the Dragons over the next 10 minutes.
Ellis would end the Drexel run with another unassisted tally that closed the gap to 4-2 midway through the opening period. Emily Hoesch, who led everyone with eight points (four goals; four assists), followed for the Dragons before another Wagner goal coming this time from freshman Janine Bright (Commack, NY / Commack) off a helper from Ellis.
The Dragons offense continued to be too much for the Seahawks as they extended the lead to 7-3 with two more scores over the next three minutes of game time.
Wagner kept fighting as sophomore Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA / Jenkintown) scored two straight for the Seahawks which narrowed the deficit back to a pair of goals. After sitting out the past two games due to injury, the Philadelphia Area product led the team with eight shots on the day.
Unfortunately for the Seahawks the offense disappeared after Richmond's goals. Drexel would add two more scores in the first half before blanking Wagner 7-0 in the second period. Following a 16 shot first half, the Seahawks managed just five shots after the intermission and recorded nine draw controls compared to 14 for the Dragons. Sophomore Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY / Westhill), had four of the draw controls for Wagner, but was held without a point for the first time in her collegiate career. Her streak of 27 consecutive games with at least one point was the second longest active streak in the Northeast Conference before ending today.
Kelly Kerry also had for goals plus and assist in the game for the Dragons which put up 42 shots in the game.
Freshman Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY / Manlius-Fayetteville) played the first 30 minutes in goal making eight saves. Sophomore Amy Jones (Jarrettsville, MD / N. Harford) took over in the second half stopping six shots.
The Seahawks return to action on Thursday when they travel to Bucknell for a non-league contest.
