Clearwater, FL - The Seahawks rallied from a five run deficit and loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but came up just short in a tough played 6-5 loss to Oklahoma St. at the Adidas Invitational. The loss moves to Wagner to 1-2 on the young season while the Cowgirls improved to 14-13 with the win.
Oklahoma St. started things off in the top of the first inning after leadoff batter Shanel Scott used her speed to manufacture one run and a two out double drove in another. The Cowgirls would then make it 5-0 in the second with a solo home run from Shiane Cruce and a pair of two out RBI hits.
The Seahawks would rally in the last of the fourth producing three runs with two outs. Grad Student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, Pa / Hazleton) began the action with an infield single to third and was then brought home by a double into left by sophomore Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic). After junior pinch hitter Margaret Gallia (Las Vegas, NV / Community College HS) took one for the team and got hit by a pitch, junior Ami Iwicki (Flemington , NJ Hunterdon Central) belted a two run double into left and brought Wagner back with two at 5-3.
The Wagner comeback continued in the fifth when junior Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) sent a two out, two-run homer deep over the fence in left center to even the count at 5-5. Batistelli's home run, her first of the year, made her the all-time home runs leader at Wagner with 17. She moves past for Seaahwks Kim Bruckner (2002-05).
The Cowgirls would take the 6-5 in the top of the seventh on a RBI single up the middle from Krystle Sanchez.
In the bottom of the seventh, Wagner loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batter before a strikeout ended the game.
Senior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) took over on the mound in the third allowing just two hits and one run in five innings of action. Despite her solid effort, which including two Ks she fell to 0-1 on the season. Chelsey Barclay (2-4) who came on in relief in the fifth took the win.
Vanore went a perfect 3-3 in the game knocking in one and scoring another run.
The Seahawks face Jacksonville at 1:00 pm later today
