Clearwater, FL - The Wagner College softball team fell to South Florida by a final of 4-0 in their second game of Adidas Invitational at the Edward Moore Complex this afternoon. The Seahawks end the day at 1-1 after earning a win over Western Michigan earlier in the day. A 2006 NCAA Super Regional Finalist, South Florida moved to 17-7 with the win.
Wagner, which has never scored a run against the Bulls in six previous meetings, stranded two runners with one out in the first. In the second, the first three batters walked for the Seahawks, but Kristen Gordon struck out the side for USF as the game remained knotted at zero.
South Florida finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly when Britta Giddens just beat a throw home from senior rightfielder Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison).
In the sixth, Wagner threatened again after junior Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) placed a leadoff triple just inside the right field line. Unfortunately the Seahawks line-up was unable to bring her home as the score remained 1-0.
After keeping the Bulls in check for five solid innings, freshmen Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen), finally gave way as USF plated three runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth. Alison Savarege provided the big hit with a two out two run homer into left. In her collegiate debut on the mound Eshelman (0-1) scattered eight hits.
Gordon went to 5-1 and struck out nine in the win for the Bulls
Junior Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) went 2-2 and added a sacrifice hit in the game for the Seahawks
The Seahawks face Jacksonville and Oklahoma St tomorrow.
