Final Stats
Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's lacrosse team won a nail-biter this afternoon at frigid, snowcapped Wagner College Stadium defeating the Manhattan College Jaspers 10-9 in a non-conference game.
The Seahawks now move to a record of 1-2-0 on the year on the strength of senior midfielder Jessica Ellis's (Fairport, NY/Fairport) four goals while the Jaspers fall to a tally of 0-4-0 on the early season.
A see-saw battle for much of the afternoon, Wagner took the early advantage with nearly three minutes gone by when Ellis found sophomore attack Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) for a goal to put them up 1-0. Less than twenty-seconds later Ellis would do the scoring herself as she found the back of the net for her first goal of the day on an assist from freshman midfielder Teri Noll (Jordan, NY/Jordan-Eldbridge Central), her first of two on the afternoon.
Wagner would tack on two more and giving up only four to their opponent as they would take a slight two goal advantage into the halftime intermission.
It remained the same story in the second half of play as the Jaspers would never let Wagner hold more than a three goal advantage. The visitors managed to take the lead 8-7 on an unassisted score with 12:57 remaining. A little more than a minute later Jessica Richmond added her second goal of the game, a pivotal one for her team, as it made everyone square at 8 apiece.
From there, the Seahawks would take control and never look back when sophomore midfielder Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) put them ahead 9-8, followed by a free position shot from Teri Noll with 9:03 left that would wind up being the winning goal.
The Jaspers got within one, 10-9, with 5:33 left on an unassisted goal from Lauren Civardi but it would prove too little as the Seahawks garnered their first win of the season in the frigid conditions.
The win came for Wagner despite losing every statistical category - turnovers, ground balls, and shots - to Manhattan.
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Johnston (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) got the win in goal by turning away nine shots, all in the second half.
The Seahawks now travel this Saturday to take on Fairfield in Connecticut at 11 a.m.
