Queens, NY - After playing St. John's to a virtual draw for the first three innings the Red Storm showed the Wagner Seahawks why they were predicted to win the prestigious Big East Conference with an 8-0 victory earlier today at Jack Kaiser Stadium. With the win St. John's improved to 10-10 on the season while the Seahawks fell to 3-11.
For the second-straight game the Green & White struggled to bring runners home as they reached base safely in every inning but were unable to capitalize, stranding 15.
Senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) went 2-4 with a double to extend his hitting streak, which is currently the longest in the NEC, to 16 games. Freshman Kevin McDonnell (Bristol, CT / Avon Old Farms) also went 2-4 with a double while sophomore Pete Delleani (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) had two singles with a walk to round out the top performers for the Wagner offense. Sophomore Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) had a solid day behind the dish as he threw out two runners trying to steal.
Freshman rhp Kyle Morrison (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) was the tough-luck loser yielding five runs while striking out two in 5.2 innings of work as he fell to 0-5 on the season. Miguel Valcarcel, a 32nd round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies a year ago, struck out four while scattering five hits over 6.0 innings to improve to 2-1.
The Green & White had the opportunity to strike first in the bottom of the second when McDonnell and freshman Vin Avella (Manalapan, NJ / CBA) led off with singles but were unable to get any further.
The Red Storm struck for two runs in the fourth on three singles before adding three in the sixth and three more in the seventh on their way to the 8-0 victory.
St. John's scored their eight runs on 12 hits while the Seahawk bats had seven hits on the day.
Ryan Mahoney paced St. John's going 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and four RBI.
The Seahawks will be right back at it tomorrow when they play host to Lafayette starting at 3 pm.
