Box Score
Kissimmee, FL - Down 13-3 in the fifth inning the Seahawks scored 12 unanswered runs to post a 15-13 win over Central Connecticut St University in a non-league contest at the Rebel Games this afternoon at the Osceola Sports Complex. Wagner, which fell to Florida A&M 5-1 earlier in the day, earns a split while improving to 7-5 on the year.
Trailing by the 13-3 count in the last of the fifth, sophomore Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) started the comeback with a two run homer into left, her first of the season. Three straight infield singles followed for the Seahawks before freshman Kate Eshleman (Reno, NV / McQueen) hit a two run double into straight away center. Wagner added two more runs in the inning and trailed 13-9 as junior Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) drew a bases loaded walk and junior Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) forced in another with a fielder's choice.
In the sixth the Wagner rally continued in improbable fashion as the Seahawks put up six more runs all coming with two outs. With one runner already on, both Stephens and Eshelman reached on infield errors to load the bases for junior Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster). She would deliver with her fourth hit of the game, pulling Wagner with in 13-10. Batistelli then forced in another run getting hit by a pitch for the 13th time this season to set the Wagner single season record.
Not done yet Iwicki tied the game at 13-13 with a base hit up the middle before grad student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) provided the game winning hit with a two run single into center.
Senior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) came on in relief with one out in the fourth and picked up the win for the green and white. Hopkins (1-2) allowed just one hit in her 2+ innings of work.
Central Conn. St. went up 4-0 in the first as the first four batters reached base without recording a hit. Three straight singles followed before the Seahawks finally worked out of the bases loaded jam with a 5-2-3 double play and a pop out to short. Wagner answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning as Stevens knocked in senior Natalie Stephens (Jackson, NJ / Jackson) with a base hit into right after Stephens doubled to lead off the stanza.
The Blue Devils continued the offense in the third inning scoring five more times for a 9-1 lead. Allie Falco drove in two of the runs with a double while Karen Costes also added a run scoring double in the frame. The Seahawks answered again in the bottom of the inning receiving a two-run double from Vanore, who drove in four runs for the game, to leave Wagner down 9-3.
The score went to 11-3 in the top of the fourth with two more runs from CCSU. After a one out single Sara Budrick belted a double deep into left and both runners came into to score when the relay throw into second sailed wide of the bag. The Blue Devils tacked on two additional runs in the fifth to extend the margin to 13-3.
Eight different players had a hit in the game, including seven multi-hit performances and six multi RBI games.
The Seahawks complete play at the Rebel Games tomorrow with a double header against Cornell starting at 9:00 am.
