Kissimmee, FL - Wagner freshman Kate Eshelman (Reno, NV / McQueen) hurled her second consecutive shutout as the Seahawks shutout UW-Green Bay by a count of 4-0 at the Rebel Games this afternoon. Wagner which defeated Vermont 6-0 earlier in the day, has now won four straight and improves to 6-4 on the year. The Phoenix fall to 8-8 with the loss.
Eshelman allowed just four hits in the game while posting two strikeouts. Only one runner made it past second base against the rookie who has not allowed an earned run in the last 19 innings.
After five scoreless innings the Seahawks finally broke the game open in the sixth inning scoring four runs on two hits. Eshelman and Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) scored the first two runs when grad student Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) reached on an error by the shortstop. After a foul out, sophomore Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) grounded out to short, but knocked in junior Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) for a 3-0 Wagner lead. Junior Margaret Gallia (Las Vegas, NV / Community College HS) made it 4-0 one batter later with a RBI single into right to score Batistelli.
Batistelli went 2-2 in the game and was also hit twice by a pitch. So far this season she has been hit eight times (10 games) bringing her career total to 28 moving her past former Seahawk Stacey Veech (1999-01) for the all-time lead at Wagner.
Wagner will face Florida A&M and Central Conn. St. in non league play at the Rebel Games tomorrow afternoon.
