Seahawks Fall In Extra Innings 4-3 To Saint Peter's In Home Opener

March 13, 2007

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner Seahawks lost 4-3 in 10 innings to Saint Peter's in their home opener earlier today at Dr. Bill Willetts Field. With their sixth-straight win the Peacocks improve to 7-8 while the Seahawks drop to 2-5 on the young season.

Joe Romano singled to right field with two outs in the top of the 10th inning to bring home Kevin Kallert, who had singled earlier in the inning, to provide the difference for the Peacocks.

Wagner's pitchers did a solid job allowing Saint Peter's to score in only two innings while scattering 12 hits as the Peacocks left 10 runners on base. One game after ripping a season-high 16 hits the Seahawk-offense managed just seven hits and 10 base-runners.

Both teams were held scoreless for the first three innings before Saint Peter's struck first in the fourth. Santo Maertz homered to right field with one out to put the Peacocks up 1-0. SPC would add two more runs on the strength of three-straight singles.

The Seahawks answered in the bottom of the fourth when senior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) blasted his first home run of the season and the 10th of his career to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Green & White would then tie the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman Joe Conforti (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) led off with a double before senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) extended his season-opening hitting streak to seven with a two-run home run to right field that stayed fair by just inches. Mastrianni followed with a base hit to right field, chasing Saint Peter's starter Jose Pinto. However Peacocks reliever Chris Innis was up to the task as he quelled the Seahawk-threat striking out two over 5.0 innings of scoreless-ball. He picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Freshman Buddy Cipoletti (West Islip, NY / St. John The Baptist) gave up one run in one inning of relief to fall to 0-1 on the season. Seahawk-starter Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) yielded just those three fourth-inning runs while striking out six in 6.0 solid innings. Also standing out on the mound was freshman Matt Watson (Howell, NJ / Howell), who struck out two in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Mastrianni had two hits, including his two-run home run, while fellow senior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) went 2-4 to lead the Seahawk-offense.

The Seahawks head back to the road where they will take on Big South Power Winthrop in Rock Hill, SC in a three-game set this weekend (March 16-18).
