UMBC Shuts Out Wagner 5-0

March 10, 2007

Box Score

Baltimore, MD - Despite a standout complete-game performance from freshman Kyle Morrison (Middlesex, NJ / Immaculata) the Wagner Seahawks lost 5-0 to UMBC earlier today in game two of their three-game set at the Baseball Factory Field. Wagner is now 1-4 on the season while the Retrievers improve to 3-5.

Morrison (0-2) yielded just one earned run while striking out six against zero walks in going 8.0 strong innings for the Green & White. He needed just 80 pitches for the complete game and worked six 1-2-3 innings, including retiring the last 14 batters in a row.

UMBC struck early when they parlayed a first-inning error into four unearned runs. However Morrison settled down allowing just two hits the rest of the game. The Retrievers would add another run in the top of the fourth.

The Seahawks had their chances as they left six runners on base compared to just two for UMBC, but only had the leadoff hitter reach base in one inning while seeing just one runner advance to third base.

Senior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) started off the fourth inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout but could get no further.

The Seahawks again threatened in the top of the seventh when junior Dan Morvay (Jackson, NY / Jackson Memorial) and freshman Kevin Payne (Staten Island, NY / St. Peter's) each walked on four pitches with two outs but were left stranded when sophomore Chris Drechsel (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) was forced into a force play.

Senior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) went 2-4 while Morvay was 1-2 with a walk to lead the Wagner-offense.

UMBC starter Eddie Bach struck out eight and yielded four hits and two walks over 8.0 innings to even up his record at 1-1. Steve Bowen had two doubles and Scott Peddicord had a hit and two RBI to provide the offense for UMBC.

Wagner had four hits while the Retrievers scored their five runs on just six hits.

The Seahawks and the Retrievers will take the field tomorrow at 3:00 pm in the series finale.
