Final Stats

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's lacrosse team lost 16-7 in their season opener earlier today at the Wagner College Stadium. With the win the Lions improve to 1-1-0 while the Green & White are 0-1-0.

Columbia sprinted out of the gates scoring the first six goals of the game, including two each from Kate Lombard and Rachael Ryan. The Seahawks finally broke through when they lit the lamp for the first time as sophomore Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored an unassisted goal. The Lions answered right away with three-straight goals to go up 9-1. Fellow sophomore Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA / Jenkintown) temporarily stopped the bleeding as she scored back-to-back goals, the first on a free-position shot and the second on a pretty pass from freshman Janine Bright (Commack, NY / Commack). Columbia would tack on a goal to make it 10-3 at the half.

It was more Columbia in the second as they scored six of the first seven goals of the half to push the lead out to a game-high 16-4. The Green & White then finished the game off strong recording three-straight goals of the sticks of sophomore Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY / Westhill), Richmond and Blunden to make the final score 16-7.

Emma Mintz recorded eight saves in improving to 1-1-0 on the season while sophomore Amy Jones (Jarrettsville, MD / North Harford) took the loss, falling to 0-1-0. Freshman Alex Johnson (Manlius, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) replaced Jones early in the first and made a game-high nine saves in her collegiate debut.

Columbia outshot Wagner 34-17 and had an overwhelming advantage in draw controls (16-9).

Blundin and Richmond led the Wagner-attack as they each scored three goals with an assist. Lombard and Holly Glynn netted four goals apiece, pacing Columbia.

Wagner returns to action on Saturday at 1 pm when they host Saint Joseph's.
