Staten Island, NY -Monmouth University stopped a three game winning steak for Wagner College with a 70-63 win in Northeast Conference play at the Spiro Sports Center tonight. Losing for just the second time in six games, the Seahawks fell to 6-6 in the NEC and 9-14 overall. The Hawks meanwhile pulled even in the league standings at 6-6 and moved to 11-13 overall. Both teams are now in a three way tie with Robert Morris for sixth place in the NEC.
Sophomore Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD / McDonogh) had his first career double-double with a game high 21 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS / Olathe East) made six three pointers and finished with 20 points, but Wagner shot just 34 percent in the second half in the loss
The Seahawks first gained the lead using a 9-0 first half run that finished with a 16-10 Wagner advantage at the 8:12 mark. After Monmouth closed to with in one point (20-19) three minutes later, Mundweiler helped an 8-2 stretch with a pair of threes as the team led 28-21. Mike Shipman would then hit a three pointer in the final minute for the Hawks as the half time score stood as 28-24 in favor of the Seahawks.
In the second half Monmouth evened the count at 31 all on a three from Jhamar Youngblood and again at 34 all on a Youngblood free throw at the 16 minute mark. Wagner responded with a 13-5 stretch in the next five minutes and took their largest lead of the game at 47-39 following a layin by Smith with 10:54 to play.
The Seahawks shooting then hit an icy spell as the Hawks sent off on a 19-2 run that put the game away. Wagner shot just 1-10 from three during the eight minute period
Down 11 with three minutes left Wagner outscored Monmouth 11-7 to account for the final margin.
Junior Mark Porter (Atlantic City, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) dished out a season high eight assists and matched a season low with just one turnover for Wagner which ended the game hitting 36.8 percent of their shots. The Seahawks out rebounded their third straight opponent holding a 41-38 edge, but scored under 70 points for the first time in six games.
Marques Alston led Monmouth with 16 points as the team hit 45.5 percent for the game. Youngboold added a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Shipman was also in double figures with 12 points.
The Seahawks continue play on the road this Saturday at Sacred Heart. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
