Jersey City, NJ - Despite 28 points off the bench from the freshmen duo of Ashley Olsen (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) and Stephanie McBride (Mechanicville, NY / Catholic Central) the Wagner Seahawks (2-2) were dealt a 77-52 loss against Saint Peter's (5-1) at the Yanitelli Center. Olsen scored a career and game-high 18 points, fueled by four three pointers, on 5-12 shooting in just 22 minutes of action while McBride deposited a career-high 10 points to lead the Green & White.
Saint Peter's dominated Wagner on the glass by 41-33 margin, leading to a 48-14 advantage in points in the paint.
The Peahens also shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the floor compared to just 34.0 percent (17-50) for the Seahawks. In defeat, Wagner shot a season-best 41.2 percent (7-17) from three-point land while the Seahawk bench outscored their counterparts 32-27.
After senior Ieva Sulskyte (Vilnius, Lithuania / Daytona Beach CC) scored the first basket of the game, Saint Peter's ripped off an 18-4 run to go up 18-6 at the 13:05 mark. Olsen then knocked down back-to-back three pointers in less than a minute to cut the deficit to 18-12 and force a Peahen timeout with 11:31 remaining. Saint Peter's would reassume command over the Green & White, outscoring Wagner 22-11 to end the half for a 40-23 lead at intermission. In the pivotal first half, Saint Peter's shot 53.1 percent (17-32) while forcing 13 Wagner turnovers that led to 14 points.
Saint Peter's would push their lead out to as many as 29 points in the second before coming away with the 77-52 win. McBride and Olsen accounted for 22 of Wagner's 29 second-half points, including four three pointers.
Sophomore floor general Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) just missed out on double-digits with eight points, a game-high four assists and two steals.
Leading the way for Saint Peter's was Tania Kennedy, who scored 14 of her team-best 16 points in the first stanza. Lauma Reke also added 11 points with eight rebounds while Marcenia Bellamy chipped in with six points and 11 rebounds for the Peahens.
Wagner is next in action when they travel to the Windy City to take part in the Mildred and Roger L. White Invitational (Nov. 30-Dec. 1), hosted by Northwestern University. The Seahawks will square off with Boston College on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 pm (EST). The host Wildcats and Central Michigan will play in the nightcap.
