Penalty Kick The Difference As Seahawks Lose To Red Flash, 2-1

Nov. 2, 2007

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - A penalty kick converted by Saint Francis (PA) sophomore Alyssa Kersey in the 49th minute turned out to be the game-winning goal as the Wagner Women's Soccer team lost their sixth NEC match-up this afternoon at Wagner College Stadium, 2-1. The Seahawks move to a record of (3-12-1, 1-6-1 NEC) on the year while the Red Flash improve to (6-9-3, 3-3-2 NEC).

The visiting Red Flash got it started 48 minutes into the game when freshman Chelsea Traurig found sophomore Brittini Grenninger for a boot past Seahawk freshman goalkeeper Samantha Schueschner (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) for a score.

Then, almost a minute later, Saint Francis (PA) would get the penalty kick opportunity that turned into a 2-0 lead and, ultimately, the win.

Wagner didn't go out without a fight, however.

In the 57th minute Seahawk freshman midfielder Ashley Rastello (Eastport, NY/Eastport-Southmanor) got a great look on goal and just barely missed a goal when her shot ricocheted off the post. The ricochet, however, was swarmed by a couple of Wagner jerseys and deposited into the net by freshman midfielder Jessica Balling (Seaford, NY/MacArthur) for her team-leading third goal of the year that cut the deficit in half with just over thirty minutes left in the game.

Unfortunately for Wagner that deficit couldn't be erased in those thirty minutes and 2-1 became the final.

Saint Francis (PA) edged Wagner in shots (13-9) as well as corner kicks (3-0).

Schueschner would spend all 90 minutes in between the pipes and finished with two saves.

The Green & White will welcome in Robert Morris University this Sunday for the final game of the 2007 season and senior captain Danielle Telleria's (Orlando, FL/Winter Springs) final game of her Wagner career. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
