Staten Island, NY - Sophomore shooting guard John'a Poole (Middle River, MD / Eastern Technical) scored 12 points in the decisive first half as the Wagner women's basketball team raced out to a 33-14 lead at intermission and never looked back, running past the Tigers 75-49.
Senior guard Chelsey Bunyer (Shannon, IL/ Eastland) poured in 22 points to lead a blanced Wagner attack as four players hit for double figures. Sophomore Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) hit for 14 points, with eight assists, while Poole also tallied 14 apiece and senior forward Ieva Sulskyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/ Daytona CC) chimed in with 10.
With the victory, the Seahawks improved to 2-0 on the season, having defeated Columbia 78-67 on Nov. 10. Wagner's sweep of its first two opponents, both Ivy League foes, gives the Seahawks their first 2-0 start since 1998-99. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 0-2 on the season.
The 26-point margin of victory was the largest posted by Wagner since Feb. 1, 2003 when the Seahawks defeated Robert Morris by 32 points (75-43).
There was no inkling early on that Wagner would win by such a wide margin as Princeton scored the first seven points of the game. But the Seahawks then responded by embarking on a 30-4 run over the next 16:30 to take a commanding 30-11 lead before Princeton's Addie Micir hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds left in the opening half to make it 30-14. Poole quickly countered by nailing a three-point point jumper at the buzzer as the Seahawks jubilantly ran off the floor with a 33-14 halftime lead.
Wagner's suffocating defense held Princeton scoreless for a span of 11:33 in the first half as the Seahawks rattled off 18 unanswered points, turning a 9-6 deficit into a 27-9 lead. For the half, Wagner limited Princeton to just 6-23 from the field (26.1%) while forcing the Tigers into committing 16 turnovers. The Seahawks' crisp ball movement resulted in 11 assists on 12 made field goals in the opening stanza.
For the game, Wagner finished with 22 assists on 30 made field goals, Wagner picked up its pace in the second half, shooting a blistering 58.1% over the final 20 minutes to finish at 44.1% for the game. Princeton wound up shooting 30.5%.
