West Long Branch, NJ - The Seahawks recent road woes continued this evening as they fell to host Monmouth University, 69-58 in Northeast Conference action at Boylan Gymnasium this evening. Wagner falls to 1-1 in the NEC and 4-9 overall, having now lost five straight away from home. The Monmouth Hawks moved to 1-1 in the NEC and 6-8 overall.
In the first half after sophomore Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD / Towson Catholic) gave the Seahawks a 12-11 lead at 13:03 left, Wagner missed their next five shots from the field and had three turnovers as Monmouth went on a 10-0 run. Down 21-14, sophomore Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS / Olathe East) finally ended the drought six minutes later with a baseline jumper. A three from junior Mark Porter (Atlantic, City, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) on the next possession cut the deficit to four (21-17), but the Hawks outscored Wagner 11-8 to close out the half and take a 32-25 lead at intermission.
Monmouth would go up 34-25 in the opening minute of the second half before the Seahawks would make their move. After two free throws Mundweiler hit back to back three's from the corner to close the gap to just three (36-33) at the 15:29 mark.
Wagner would go through another scoring drought however as they missed their next seven shots. The Hawks would use the drought to put together a 19-4 run that put the game away with 6:47 left. Wagner would trail byas many as 20 (65-45) before the Seahawks provided the final margin with 13-4 stretch.
Wagner would shoot 35.1 percent, but hit just 30 percent (9-30) of their attempts after halftime. They were led by a career high 14 points from Justin Drummond (Baltimore, MD / McDonogh). Junior James Ulrich (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Camden Catholic) (nine rebounds) and Mundweiler each added 11 points in the game as well.
Monmouth was led by 15 points from Dejan Delic. The Hawks shot 55.3 percent for the game, including a 61.9 percent showing in the second half. They held a slight 34-33 edge in rebounding and outscored Wagner 28-14 in the paint.
The Seahawks complete a four game road swing on Saturday at Fairleigh Dickinson.
