Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's basketball team was stopped by visiting St. Francis (NY) 66-51 in Northeast Conference action at the Spiro Sports Center today. The loss moved the Seahawks to 2-4 in the NEC and 5-12 overall. The Terriers ended a three game losing streak while moving to 2-6 (NEC) and 4-16.
Both junior James Ulrich (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Camden Catholic) (11 points) and sophomore Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD / Towson Catholic) (10 points) reached double figures in the game, but Wagner shot just 35.2 percent for the game and a meager 20.8 percent from three (5-24).
After St. Francis managed a 13-9 lead at the 14:32 mark of the first half, Wagner set off on a 10-2 stretch that was topped off with a Justin Drummond (Baltimore, MD / McDonogh) lay-in at 10:20. The Seahawks used to run to take a 19-15 lead. Following Drummond's basket Wagner struggled offensively and was held scoreless over the next seven minutes. During the scoreless gap the Terriers had a 10-0 run to regain the lead (25-19) with just under six minutes left in the opening half.
The Seahawks responded and took a brief one point advantage (26-25) following a three from sophomore Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS / Olathe East), but five straight points to end the half gave St. Francis a four point cushion of 30-26 heading into the locker room.
A Wagner 10-2 advantage began the second half as the Seahawks went on top 36-34 following a pair of foul shots from Ulrich two and a half minutes into the period. The Terriers would later hold a 53-38 advantage as they gained control of the ball game with a 19-2 run covering the next seven minutes of action. The Seahawks shot just 1-7 during the span while committing four turnovers.
Using one last surge, Wagner closed the deficit to seven (55-48) following a basket by Smith with six minutes left. However the offensive production went absent once more for the green and white as they missed their next three foul shots and were held without a field goal the rest of the game.
Robert Hines led the way with 17 points and nine rebounds for the Terriers. Marcus Williams added 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists as St. Francis shot 48.1 percent for the game and 61.9 percent in the second half. The Terriers also held a 41-30 advantage in rebounding.
