Fairfield, CT - For the second-straight year the Sacred Heart Pioneers jumped out to a huge first half lead and coasted to a 76-49 victory over Wagner earlier tonight at the Pitt Center. With the win Sacred Heart improves to 11-6 and stays undefeated in NEC play at 6-0 while Wagner falls to 2-15 and 1-6 in the NEC.
Senior Takesha Dye (Boynton Beach, FL / Daytona Beach CC) had 10 points and six rebounds to lead the Green & White. Sophomore Laura Ahern (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) had a season-high eights points and junior Chelsey Bunyer (Shannon, IL / Eastland) also had eight points to round out the top performers for the Seahawks.
For the game, the Green & White only shot 34.5 percent (19-55) and were outrebounded 38-24 while the Pioneers hit 56.9 percent (33-58) of their shots, including 7-14 from behind the arc. The Pioneers also had a dominating 40-14 advantage in points in the paint.
Sacred Heart started off the game on a 14-2 run to take a commanding 42-17 lead into intermission. In the opening stanza the Pioneers shot a blistering 57.6 percent (19-33) from the field while holding Wagner to just 25.9 percent shooting (7-27). The SHU frontcourt also controlled the glass in the decisive first half outrebounding Wagner 22-11, leading to a 26-4 advantage in points in the paint.
The second half was evenly played as the Seahawks managed to shoot 42.9 percent from the floor and knock home 4-9 from beyond the arc but by that time the game was already out of reach.
Lisa Moray led four double-digit scorers for Sacred Heart with 17 points, fueled by five three pointers.
The Seahawks will take a break from their NEC schedule when they host Division I newcomer New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Thursday at 7 pm.
