Brooklyn, NY - The Seahawks of Wagner College ended a five game losing streak with a 73-66 win on the road at Northeast Conference rival St. Francis (NY) in men's basketball action. The win also left a six game road losing skid behind and improved the team to 2-3 in the NEC and 5-11 overall. The Terriers fell to 1-5 (NEC) and 3-15.
Four players reach double figures for Wagner, but it was a pair of free throws from sophomore Llewchean Radford (Newport News, VA / Heritage) with 28 seconds left that helped seal the win.
Starting out just 1-7 from the field, Wagner fell behind 14-3 at the 14 minute mark of the first half. A layin by sophomore Justin Drummond (Baltimore, ND / McDonogh) began a Seahawk's rally as they outscored the Terriers 32-11 over the next 12 minutes of game action. Sophomore Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS / Olathe East) led the charge shooting 6-7 with 15 points during the stretch which helped give Wagner a 37-28 halftime advantage.
In the second half, after the Seahawks scored the first six points, St. Francis (NY) crawled back into the contest with a 21-10 run that left them trailing by four (53-49) with 11 minutes left. Senior Matt Vitale (Brooklyn, NY / St. Edmund's Prep) would answer with back to back threes on the next two Wagner possessions to quickly push the advantage back to 10. A little more than two and a half minutes later, Drummond scored inside to put the Seahawks up nine at the 7:13 mark. However that would be the last field goal of the game for Wagner, as the Terriers eventually came back to with in two points (68-66) after a make by Robert Hines with 59 seconds remaining.
Wagner would miss on the other end which was followed by a pair of errant free throws from St. Francis to set up Radford's clutch foul shots. The sophomore entered the game making just 41 percent from the foul line, but calmly hit both to seal the win. The Seahawks would shoot 12-18 from the foul line in the final seven minutes after Drummond's lay-in.
Mundweiler led the team with 15 points, followed by junior James Ulrich (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Camden Catholic) with 14 points along with six assists. Junior Mark Porter (Atlantic City, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) added 12 points, while Vitale completed his night with 10, including a trio of three pointers.
Wagner shot 43.1 percent for the game compared to 42.4 percent for the Terriers. Marcus Williams led the Terriers with 15 points. Robert Hines and Allan Sheppard each added 13.
The Seahawks are off until a rematch next Saturday with St. Francis (NY) at the Sprio Sports Center. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
