POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Wagner College volleyball team fell 3-0 to CCSU in the season opener for both teams earlier this afternoon at the Marist Tournament. CCSU claimed the first game by a score of 30-18. The Seahawks then closed the gap in each of the next two games before dropping 30-22 and 30-26 decisions.
The Seahawks were done in by their poor hitting percentage as the Blue Devils outhit Wagner by a .296-.000 count.
Sophomore Brandy Barnett (Claremont, CA / St. Lucy's Priory) led the way for Wagner with a game-high 11 kills on a .212 hitting percentage to go along with a team-best seven digs. Senior Trish Morris (Queensland, Australia / St. Pats College) also had five kills fueled by a .308 hitting percentage. Classmate Lydia Emnott (Neenah, WI / Neenah) rounded out the top performers for the Green & White with a team-high 11 assists.
"Even though we lost we did really well as a team," said Barnett. "We never gave up and I feel like we are heading in the right direction."
Wagner closes out the Marist Tournament tomorrow with a match against the homestanding Red Foxes at 10:30 am and a 4:30 pm tilt with Colgate.
