Box Score
BROOKLYN, NY - The Wagner College Seahawks fell by a score of 5-3 to St. Francis (NY) earlier today at the Narrows Complex in Brooklyn, NY. The loss drops Wagner to 11-31 and 10-8 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while St. Francis (NY) improves to 4-31 and 1-17 in the NEC. The Seahawks took both games yesterday by scores of 4-3 and 10-2.
Wagner came out of the gates flat, not recording a base hit until the top of the fourth, and were plagued by their inability to bring runners home as they stranded 11 runners.
SFNY scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to go up early by a score of 3-0.
In the top of the eighth, freshman Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) singled with one out before senior Joseph Malfettano (Toms River, NJ / Toms River North) followed with a single of his own. Classmate Brian Scrocca (Somerville, NJ / Somerville) then reached via an error by the shortstop allowing Huebner to score and Malfettano to advance to third base. Senior Mike Picarello (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) took advantage of the SFNY miscue, blasting the first pitch he saw to center field, plating Malfettano to make it 3-2. However that was all the Seahawks could muster the rest of the inning.
The Terriers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, pushing the lead back to three at 5-2.
In the top of the ninth, junior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) blasted his fourth home run of the year to left field but that would be it for the Green & White as they lost 5-3.
Sudol was the lone Seahawk to record multiple-hits going 2-5 on the day.
Senior rhp Mike D'Angelis (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) was the pitcher of record for Wagner striking out five in 3.1 innings as he dropped to 1-9 on the season.
Junior rhp Dan Lanzano (E. Brunswick, NJ / E. Brunswick) was impressive in relief, yielding just one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings.
Joseph Aglio was the winner for SFNY, improving to 2-3 on the season while Matt Doran picked up his first save of the year.
Wagner will next be in action on Thursday, May 11 at 2 pm when they host Iona.
