Box Score
EMMITSBURG, MD - After being shut down for 5.2 innings, Mount St. Mary's scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat Wagner 5-3 while gaining a split in today's doubleheader. The Seahawks fell to 5-19 and 4-1 in the NEC while the Mount improved to 11-14 and evened up their NEC record at 4-4.
The first five innings belonged to the starting pitchers as sophomore lhp Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) struck out eight and allowed only an infield single and Mount starter Steve Stone fanned seven and allowed just three hits.
In the top of the sixth the Seahawks got going as junior Joe DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) singled through the right side. After a DiGeronimo stolen base and a Nick Papa (Sr., Freehold, NJ / Freehold) walk, Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) laid down a beautiful bunt down the third base line to load the bases and chase Stone from the game. Freshman Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) then greeted new pitcher Bucky Kosyk with a double to right field, plating DiGeronimo and Papa. Following a fly out senior Brian Scrocca (Somerville, NJ / Somerville) walked loading the bases again with one out. Sophomore Dan Morvay (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) then singled to the pitcher putting the Seahawks up 3-0 heading into the bottom part of the inning.
The bottom of the sixth starting innocently enough as Matt Trusch collected his second infield-hit of the game on a weakly hit ball to the left side. Following a fly out, Testa induced the next batter to ground into a fielder's choice, narrowly missing the double-play. After a walk Josh Vittek hit a game-tying three-run home that just cleared the left-field fence to make the score 3-3. The Mount would score two more runs on their way to a come-from-behind 5-3 victory.
DiGeronimo recorded multi-hits for the eighth time in nine games, going 2-4 with a run and Huebner went 2-3 with a two-run double to lead the way for the Green & White.
Testa struck out eight in 5.2 innings in falling to 1-4 on the year while Bucky Kosyk pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to get the win and move to 1-0 on the season.
The two teams will complete their three-game set tomorrow with a single nine-inning game starting at 12:00 pm.
