NEW BRITAIN, CT - Playing in rainy conditions the Wagner College Seahawks split a doubleheader with Central Connecticut State earlier this afternoon at Balf-Savin Field, winning game two 3-0 on the strength of sophomore lhp Joe Testa's (Brick, NJ / Brick) first career shutout and senior catcher Michael Picarello's (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) two-run home run. Wagner dropped game one by an 8-1 score.
With the split Wagner moves to 8-26 and 7-4 in the NEC while the Blue Devils are now 20-10 and 6-5 in the NEC.
Testa struck out seven and got stronger as the game went on as he retired the last six Blue Devil batters in order while yielding only two hits in improving to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the NEC. CCSU mounted only one serious threat during the game, loading the bases in the bottom of the fourth only to see Testa strike out the very next batter.
The Green & White scored the game's only three runs in the top of the second as senior Nick Papa (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) walked to lead off the inning and stole second before advancing to third on a groundout. Freshman Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) opened the scoring with an RBI single to right field to bring home Papa. Picarello followed Huebner's hit with his first home run of the season and the second of his career to make it 3-0.
That was all Testa would need as he went the distance for the second time this season in picking up his team-best third win.
Matt Gianini also went the distance for CCSU striking out five and allowing all three runs in falling to 4-4 on the season.
CCSU took game one by an 8-1 count as the Blue Devils scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the bottom of the fifth. CCSU starter Evan Scribner improved to 5-2, striking out four in his fifth complete game of the year.
The Seahawks' offense could muster only one run on four hits, including none after the fourth inning.
Senior rhp Mike D'Angelis (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) was the pitcher of record falling to 1-7 on the season.
Redshirt-junior rhp Andrew Bailey (Haddon Heights, NJ / Paul VI) started his first game in over a year and struck out two while yielding just one run on one hit in 3.0 innings.
Picarello and Huebner each recorded two hits on the day to lead the Seahawks offensively.
The two teams will try to beat the rain again as they conclude their three-game series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game beginning at 12:00 pm.
