College Park, MD -- The Wagner College women's water polo team wrapped up play in the ECAC Championships with a crushing loss to the host University of Maryland Terrapins. Wagner had hoped to avenge an loss earlier this season to Maryland 12-10 at the Princeton Invitational but were unsuccessful. The Seahawks fell in this game 8-7 despite leading 5-3 at halftime and now stand at 15-12 on the season.
Wagner struck first in the contest when sophomore Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) tallied a score quickly giving the Green & White a 1-0 advantage. However the Terps would battle back ripping off three straight goals to build a 3-1 advantage headed to the second frame.
The Seahawks came out guns blazing in the next quarter as Hoelck scored two more of her five goals on the day to tie things at three with 4:44 remaining until halftime. Junior Stacey Travous (New Ulm,MN/Cumberland Valley) then drew a four meter penalty which was converted by senior Sara Kramer (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) and Wagner was back on top 4-3. They would add another Hoelck goal following yet another Travous drawn four meter and headed to half up 5-3.
The wheels temporarily fell off the wagon in the third as Maryland put on a shooting exhibition logging four unanswered goals as the Terps built a 7-5 lead with the fourth quarter looming.
Wagner who has had a knack for coming back from deficits all season long did so again in the fourth as Hoelck scored her final goal to bring the Seahawks within one at 7-6. Travous drew her third four meter penalty of the game which led to another Kramer goal and suddenly the game was even at seven midway through the quarter.
However Maryland would not be denied as they produced one more goal to give themselves an 8-7 lead. The Seahawks had a few opportunities but were unable to score the tying goal. Freshman Jennifer Anderson (Whittier, CA/La Serna) played the entire game in next registering seven rejections.
Wagner now prepares for the heart of their MAAC schedule with games coming this Friday in Loudonville, New York against Iona and Siena.
