April 2, 2006

Final Stats

STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Wagner women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-16 overtime heartbreaker to the visiting Quinnipiac Bobcats earlier today at Wagner Stadium. With the loss the Seahawks fall to 2-8 and 0-3 in the NEC while the Bobcats improve to 5-4 and 4-0 in the NEC.

Freshman Jessica Richmond (Jenkintown, PA / Jenkintown) led six multi-goal scorers for the Seahawks with four while senior Heather George (West Allenhurst, NJ / Ocean Township) and freshman Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY / Westhill) chipped in with three apiece to lead the Green & White.

The Seahawks raced out to an early 10-4 lead, including five straight at one time, while chasing the Bobcats starting goaltender. In the early Wagner spurt, Richmond netted all four of her goals.

Quinnipiac would not go away as they cut the deficit to four at 10-6 right before halftime with two quick goals. Wagner would get one of those goals back off the stick of senior Darby Biggart (Crownsville, MD / Arch. Spalding) before the Bobcats scored four straight to tie it up at 11-11. Wagner answered with three-straight goals to make it 14-11 with 17:49 remaining.

As they did all game, the Bobcats rallied with four straight goals to ahead for the first time all day 15-14 with 4:58 remaining. Quinnipiac then started to run time off the clock before Seahawk goalie freshman Amy Jones (North Hartford, MD / North Hartford) made a crucial save on a one-on-one situation, giving the Seahawks one last chance to tie the game.

Wagner capitalized on a freshman Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Plymouth Whitemarsh) goal with 1:01 remaining, on a controversial play in which the Seahawk-goal was not immediately signaled. The Blundin goal tied the game up at 15-15 and sent it into overtime.

In the first overtime Wagner went up 16-15 on a Heather George goal. Quinnipiac would answer in the next overtime when Danielle Mormile scored to knot it up at 16. In the first sudden-victory overtime period neither team scored. However in the second one, Tiffany Manzi scored with 2:43 remaining, giving Quinnipiac the win.

Jones made a career-high 20 saves in goal for the Seahawks while falling to 2-8 on the year.

Wagner returns to action on Friday, April 7 when they host Robert Morris at 3 pm.
