Villanova, PA -- The Wagner College women's water polo team remained undefeated in conference play after a thrilling double overtime come from behind victory over the Marist Red Foxes in a game held at Villanova University. The Seahawks pulled out the 9-8 victory in sudden death thanks to a goal by freshman Nicole Maichrowicz. Maichrowicz found the back of the net in the third extra session after the double period of the first overtime left both teams tied at 8. The win now raises the Seahawks record to 21-12 and 6-0 in the MAAC.
Things started off slow for Wagner as they were quickly down 2-0 to Marist in the first. Maichrowicz answered with her first goal of the day to pull Wagner within one at 2-1 after one. Wagner then got down 3-1 before Courtney Crase (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) found the net making things 3-2 but Marist answered again making it 4-2. Crase would then draw a four meter penalty leading to a Sara Kramer (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) conversion and at the half the Seahawks were down 4-3.
There was 6:28 remaining in the third quarter when Kramer again lit the proverbial lamp with another score tying the contest at 4 off a feed from Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS). Two Wagner kickouts led to two Marist goals and just as fast the Seahawks were in the hole again 6-4. With 10 seconds left in the quarter Wagner got a crucial goal from Anne Wolkenhauer (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton Union) and trailed just one 6-5 going to the fourth.
Crase came up big in the opening minutes of the fourth tipping home a Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) miss to tie the score at six. Wagner would finally take a lead as Hoelck scored with 3:33 remaining in the quarter to put the Seahawks up 7-6. The back and forth game rolled on however with a Marist goal to again tie the score this time at seven with 1:04 remaining. Opportunites for both teams would prove fruitless as the time in regulation ran out and the game moved to overtime.
The first overtime consisted of two three minute periods. Marist took the lead in the first overtime and appeared to be on the verge of victory until a monumental goal by Hoelck with 22 second remaining in the period tied the score at eight. This was the score that sent the game to the third extra session allowing Maichrowicz to cash in on the winning tally. Junior Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) played every period in net and refuted ten Marist shots.
Wagner is next in action this Saturday at home when they host St. Francis (NY) at 10 am and Siena at 5:30 pm. The Siena contest will also feature the honoring of the Seahawks senior class.
