HARRISONBURG, VA - The Wagner College baseball team dropped their season-opening doubleheader at James Madison earlier today. The Seahawks fell in game one by a count of 27-5 and game two by a score of 35-2.
With the losses the Seahawks fall to 0-2 on the season while the Dukes won their sixth-straight game to improve to 6-4.
Wagner jumped out to an early 1-0 first inning lead in game one when senior center fielder Nick Papa (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) doubled home junior shortstop Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne), who had doubled to lead off the game. Junior right fielder Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) then singled to make it first and third with one out before a double-play ended what could have been a big inning. The Dukes then erupted for 14 runs in their first three frames to go up by an insurmountable margin of 14-2 on their way to an easy 27-5 victory.
DiGeronimo went 3-4 in game one while sophomore designated hitter Dan Morvay (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) was 2-3 with his first collegiate home run.
Senior rhp Mike D'Angelis (Paramus, NJ / St. Joseph) took the loss giving up nine earned runs in 2.0 innings.
In game two, the Seahawks again struck early taking a 1-0 lead when Papa singled up the middle, scoring Sudol, who had reached on an error.
JMU would answer the Seahawks with a three-run first inning. The Green & White would get one of those runs back in the top of the second when Morvay blasted his second home run of the day to make the score 3-2.
From that point on it was all Dukes as they scored 32 unanswered runs to take the second game 35-2.
Sophomore lhp Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) struck out six in 4.0 innings taking the loss for the Seahawks.
Leading the Wagner offense on the day was Morvay, who was 3-5 on the day with his first two collegiate home runs, a double, three runs and two RBI. DiGeronimo went 4-8 and scored two runs and Papa was 3-5 with two RBI to round out the top performers for Seahawks.
The Seahawks wrap up their three-game set with James Madison tomorrow at 1 pm.
