Final Stats
Staten Island, NY - Wagner was outscored 12-4 in the second half in a 17-8 loss to visiting Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart at the stadium this afternoon. The loss leaves the Seahawks at 0-2 in the NEC and 2-7 on the season. The Pioneers move to 2-0 NEC and 2-8 overall.
Four different players scored two goals each for Wagner, which got off to a good start 18 minutes into the contest. Senior Anne Thomas (Alexandria, VA / E. Burk) put the Seahawks on top 1-0 with a score at 28:07 off a feeder from senior Jen Ryan (Clifton, VA / W.T Woodson). The Pioneers Emily Tully, who had four points on the day (3g; 1 a) then evened the scored with an unassisted goal five minutes later.
Back to back goals from freshman Cara Gonzalez (Syracuse, NY / Westhill) and senior Darby Biggart (Crownsville, MD / Arch. Spalding) gave the Seahawks a 3-1 lead with 19:42 left in the first half. Sacred Heart then set off on a 13-2 run spanning halftime that decided the outcome.
The run would start at 11:55 as three straight Pioneer goals gave the visitors a 4-3 lead with 6:25 left in the half. Biggart answered for Wagner to tie the score at 4-4 off an assist from Gonzalez before the Seahawks went into the lock room down 5-4 following a Pioneers score with 2:13 remaining.
The second half began as the first ended with Sacred Heart scoring four goals in the first five minutes for a 9-4 advantage. Senior Heather George (W. Allenhurst, NJ / Ocean Township) sandwiched a free position goal between another five in a row as the Seahawks trailed 14-5 with 17 minutes to play.
Wagner would try to rally with three unanswered scores to close within six, but the comeback stopped there.
Thomas, Gonzalez, Biggart and George each scored twice, while Ellis added two assists and Gonzalez (four ground balls), Ryan, and freshman Kelly Blundin (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Whitemarsh) one each. The Seahawks converted just 2-10 free position shots on the day compared to 1-2 for SHU.
Brianna Bubeck led Sacred Heart with five goals, followed by Tulley and Heather Gureckis with three each. Mauren Hohn led the team with four ground balls and four draw controls.
Wagner continues NEC play on Sunday at 12:00 pm vs Quinnipiac.
