Game Two Box
Staten Island, NY - The pitching of junior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) and the bat of Victoria Batistelli (Huntington Beach, CA / Huntington Beach) helped lead the Seahawks to a sweep of visiting Manhattan by scores of 3-0 and 8-2 today. The sweep makes it four wins in a row for Wagner as the squad improves to 14-10 on the year. The Jaspers now stand at 11-11 with the losses.
Miller recorded her second consecutive shutout, limiting Mahattan to just four hits in the game one victory. She improves to 9-5 on the year and ties the school record with her fifth shutout of the season. In the nightcap Batistelli went 3-3 with two home runs and a triple while scoring three times and knocking in three runs.
In the first game of the day, the Seahawks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a RBI single from freshman Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) that scored junior Christina Hopkins (Edison, NJ / Edison) who reached earlier on an error.
Wagner then made it 2-0 in the second with a solo home run to right center off the bat of senior Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton). For Gallagher, a former basketball standout for the green and white, it was her first career dinger. The score reached 3-0 in the fourth as Gallagher singled and scored on a two out double down the left field line from sophomore Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster).
Three runs were more than enough for Miller, who surrendered a first inning single and then held the Jaspers hitless until the top of the seventh. In the seventh, Manhattan had three consecutive singles to start the inning, before the Wagner defense took over. Hopkins caught a fly ball from the next batter in foul territory in right field then gunned down the Jasper's Kiera Fox trying to score from third for a double play. Miller would then strike out Deirdre Langan to complete the shutout.
Hopkins also added two hits in the game. Jill Medea (8-5) was handed the loss for the Jaspers.
In the second game, junior Dara Gadziala (E. Brunswick, NJ / E. Brunswick) won her fifth straight decision, allowing just five hits, improving to 5-2 on the season.
After the Jaspers grabbed a 1-0 lead with a double and a RBI single in the top of the second, Batistelli jump started the offense in the bottom of the inning. Leading off the second year catcher dropped a triple into right field and then scored on a fielder's choice from Vanore. Vanore would then move to second on a throwing error and score on a RBI bunt from freshman Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV / Wooster).
In the third, Wagner tacked on three more runs starting with sophomore Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ /Hunterdon Cent.) who plated one run with a RBI ground out. Hopkins then followed with a two out single into right before Batistelli went deep for the first time in the game with a two run shot into right.
Tina Buyea then led off the fourth with a double for the Jaspers and would later score on a fielder's choice to make it 5-2 in favor of the home team.
The Seahawks the broke the game open in the sixth as Batistelli led off the stanza with her second homer of the day, and second of the season, a solo shot into right. Vanore then followed with a solo home run of her own, her second on the year as well. Lazzari doubled later in the inning and scored on a bunt hit from junior Natalie Stephens (Jackson, NJ / Jackson) to give Gadziala a comfortable lead.
Vanore scored twice and had two hit sin the game. Liz Pennino (2-3) was dealt the loss for Manhattan.
Wagner returns to action at Yale on Saturday before host Central Connecticut St. in a Northeast Conference double header on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
