Seahawks Suffer 6-3 Defeat to Fordham, Before Darkness Cancels Game 2

March 28, 2006

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner softball team suffered a 6-3 defeat to visiting Fordham in game one before darkness canceled a 3-3 game in the last of the fifth inning in game two. The decision leaves the Seahawks at 10-10 overall and the visiting Rams at 15-13.

Fordham pushed across a run in the top of the first on a double and a single into left for a 1-0 lead. The score would remain there until the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Katie Stevens (Reno, NV / Wooster) dropped a one out double inside the left field line off Fordham relief pitcher and reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Year Sara Kinney. Freshman Jaclyn Vanore (Palisades Park, NJ / Paramus Catholic) then belted her first career home run one out later over the right field fence for a 2-1 Seahawk advantage.

Wagner then posted an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as senior Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) knocked a two out single back up the middle and came around to score two batters later on a RBI single into center from sophomore Ami Iwicki (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central).

Fordham then rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to close out the win. After four straight singles scored the first Ram run of the frame, Laura Klaiber deposited the first pitch she saw over the fence in center for a grand slam and a 6-3 score.

Iwicki, Vanore, and Gallagher each had two hits in the game for Wagner. Junior Morgan Miller (Las Vegas, NV / Silverado) struck out six in the complete game loss. The defeat ended her seven game winning streak.

Wagner will be back in action at the Lower Athletic Field tomorrow vs Iona at 2:30 pm

In the second game, Wagner trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before loading the bases and tying the game on a RBI single from Iwicki and a bases loaded walk to Vanore. Gallagher was then to bat with the bases loaded and one out, but the umpires called the game due to darkness. Because the game failed to complete five innings of play it will not count as an official contest and the statistics will not be recorded.
