March 25, 2006

Box Score

WEST POINT, NY - The Wagner College Seahawks were swept by Army by scores of 14-0 and 14-1 earlier today at Doubleday Field. With the losses, Wagner are now 1-14 while the Black Knights improve to 10-9.

In game one, the Seahawks had their chances early on as they had runners on base in every inning but the third but only seriously threatened in the first. Senior Nick Papa (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) and freshman Mike Maffucci (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) each reached on infield hits with one out, however Army starter Nick Hill struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.

The Seahawks would manage just four more hits in the contest as reigning two-time Patriot League pitcher of the year Hill struck out 10 in improving to 2-2 with the complete-game shutout.

The Seahawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second in game two when sophomore Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) singled for his first collegiate hit with the bases loaded driving in senior Brian Scrocca (Somerville, NJ / Somerville). With the bases still loaded Army escaped further damage inducing an inning-ending double-play.

From that point on it was all Army as they scored four runs in the bottom of the third to go up 4-1 on their way to a 14-1 victory.

Junior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) led the Seahawks on the day going 3-6 with a double and a walk while extending his hit-streak to five games. Scrocca and junior Pat Rogers (Middletown, NJ / St. John's) each had two hits on the day to round out the top offensive-performers for the Green & White.

Freshman rhp Andrew Huebner (Hatfield, PA / North Penn) went 4.0 innings and took the loss, falling to 0-3 on the season in game one. In the second game, sophomore rhp Thomas Weston (Fair Haven, NJ / Rumson) pitched 6.0 solid innings in taking the loss and is now 0-2.

The same two teams will meet tomorrow, March 26 in the Seahawks' home opener at Dr. Bill Willetts Field starting at 1 pm.
