Northridge, CA -- Playing their third game of the day at Cal State Northridge, the Wagner College women's water polo team dropped the hammer on Macalester by a count of 13-1. The Seahawks cruised to the easy victory by scoring 10 first half goals en route to pushing their record to 13-8 on the year.
The duo of Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) and Jennifer Anderson (Whittier, CA/La Serna) stood guard in the cage allowing just one goal in the contest. Stacey Travous (New Ulm,MN/Cumberland Valley) and Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) made the first quarter their own personal shooting exhibition as Travous tallied three goals while Tomlinson desposited two shots into the net.
The second quarter saw more of the same for the Green & White as southpaw Amber McMichael (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) opened and closed the period with goals. In between all of that junior Natasha Peterson (Whittier, CA/La Habra) scored twice and Corrine Travous (New Ulm,MN/Cumberland Valley) racked up a goal as well. The third quarter contained another goal each by Peterson and Corrine Travous as well as the final score for Wagner by freshman Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City).
One bright note for Macalester was their lockdown defense on Seahawk leading scorer Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS). Hoelck had come in averaging well over two and a half goals a game yet was held scoreless in this contest. "They just had my number today, what could I do?" lamented Hoelck to a throng of reporters following the game.
Wagner is next in action the weekend after next when they compete in a tournament held at Indiana University. The Seahawks will take on the likes of Indiana, Michigan, and Carthage.
