San Bernardino, CA -- The Wagner College women's water polo team outlasted the Spartans of Michigan State to pick up their third straight victory 10-9 in the first of two games held at Cal State San Bernardino. The Seahawks built a 5-2 lead after the first period and were leading 8-5 headed to the final stanza. However a furious rally by Michigan State brought the game to within a goal at 10-9 with just 49 seconds remaining. The Spartans had one last chance to try and even the game but a crucial Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) block with just nine second remaining sealed the deal for the Seahawks. Hauck finished with eight saves.
Offensively it was a balanced effort for Wagner. The Green & White kicked things off with a goal by junior Anne Wolkenhauer (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton). Shortly after senior Sara Kramer (Carlisle, PA/Cumblerland Valley) tallied two scores and after the first quarter Wagner was in control 5-2. The second quarter saw sophomore Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) score the first of her two goals on a man up scenario. Not long after freshman Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) scored on a hail mary pass from Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego) leaving Wagner up 7-3 at the half. Tomlinson had perhaps her most complete game of the season logging two goals, two assists, a steal, and two drawn ejections.
The third quarter saw the Spartans moved to with in 7-5 before senior Courtney Crase (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) scored her 23rd goal of the year expanding the lead to 8-5 after three. Amber McMichael (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) and Karimzad closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter for Wagner with a goal apiece leaving the Seahawks up 10-7. Wagner then weathered a two goal run by Michigan State to hang on for the win. The Seahawks are next in action later today when they take on the Rams of Colorado State.
