March 11, 2006

Box Score

ORLANDO, FL - The Wagner College Seahawks found out why Tim Bascom was the preseason pitcher of the year in the Conference USA as Bascom shut down the Seahawks striking out 12 while yielding just six baserunners in 7.0 scoreless innings in the Golden Knights 15-0 victory earlier tonight at Jay Bergman Field. With the loss the Seahawks fall to 0-4 while the Golden Knights improve to 8-9.

Sophomore lhp Joe Testa (Brick, NJ / Brick) was the tough-luck loser striking out four while giving up just four earned runs in 4.0 innings. In the decisive first inning the Golden Knights scored seven runs, one of which was earned. UCF then added three runs in the fourth and two more in the seventh before closing out the scoring with three in the eighth.

The Seahawks had their chances to score early on as they left two runners on base in three of the first four innings. Their best chance to score came in the first inning as junior Joseph DiGeronimo (Hawthorne, NJ / Hawthorne) continued his early-season success at the plate singling through the left side to lead off the game. Two batters later junior Matt Mastrianni (Ringoes, NJ / Hunterdon Central) walked. The two then advanced on a passed ball giving the Seahawks second and third with one out before Bascom struck out junior Ed Sudol (Wallington, NJ / Wallington) and coaxed senior Nick Papa (Freehold, NJ / Freehold) into a groundout to end the Seahawks' threat.

DiGeronimo, senior Michael Picarello (Clifton, NJ / Clifton), senior Brian Scrocca (Somerville, NJ), sophomore Dan Morvay (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) and freshman Mike Maffucci (Nutley, NY / Nutley) all led the Seahawks with one base hit apiece.

The Seahawks continue their three-game series with the Knights tomorrow, March 12 at 1:00 pm.
