Final Stats
Pomona, CA -- The Wagner College women's water polo lost to Cal State Bakersfield by a count of 15-8 in the first of 11 games in five days played in the state of California. The Seahawks record now moves to 6-5. Wagner fell in the contest despite a hat trick by Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS).
The Seahawks got down immediately 1-0, but tied the game not long after with a goal by junior Natasha Peterson (Whittier, CA/La Habra). However Bakersfield shot back with a five goal run over the end of the first quarter and the start of the second quarter to build a 6-1 lead. The Green and White countered with a goal by Hoelck to pull within 6-2 but ended up down at the half by a tally of 7-2.
The Seahawks rebounded in the third period. After allowing two quick goals Wagner answered back with goals by Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City), Amber McMichael (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin), and Hoelck to close within 9-5. Hoelck tacked on her third goal at the end of the third as the Seahawks climbed back within four goals.
The comeback was all for naught however as Bakersfield would outscore Wagner 5-2 in the fourth quarter en route to the 15-8 loss despite goals by Anne Wolkenhauer (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton Union), and Sara Kramer (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley). Wagner takes on Pomona-Pitzer in their next game which gets underway shortly after 6pm pacific time.
