STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Wagner College Seahawks dropped a 69-50 decision to Fairleigh Dickinson earlier tonight at the Spiro Sports Center. With the loss the Seahawks fall to 1-19 and 1-10 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Knights improve to 6-14 and 3-9 in the NEC.
The win was also just the second for the Knights in the last 24 meetings between the schools since the 1993-94 season and extends the Seahawks losing streak to nine.
Sophomore guard Chelsey Bunyer (Shannon, IL / Eastland) was the lone double-digit scorer for the Seahawks with 14 points. Senior guard Joy Gallagher (Hazleton, PA / Hazleton) and senior center Joyce Queiroz (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Colegio Spinosa) each added nine points.
Fairleigh Dickinson scored the game's first six points only to see the Seahawks answer with six of their own. The Knights then went on an 8-2 run to go up 14-8. The Seahawks quickly answered on the next possession with a Gallagher three pointer to make the score 14-11 with 12:56 remaining. From that point on it was all Fairleigh Dickinson as the Knights closed out the period on a 19-7 run while allowing the Seahawks just two field goals as they headed into halftime with an insurmountable lead of 33-18. In the half, the Knights shot 46.7 percent (14-30) and made four three pointers compared to just 25.0 percent shooting (6-24) and one three pointer for the Green & White. Fairleigh Dickinson also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Seahawks 25-12 and 8-1 on the offensive glass on the strength of 12 Jen Walkling rebounds.
For the game, Wagner shot a season-low 29.8 percent (17-57) from the floor, their worst shooting-performance since they connected on 29.4 percent in a 76-36 loss at South Florida on Dec. 20, 2004. The Knights meanwhile shot a stellar 43.4 percent (23-53) from the field and outrebounded Wagner 47-32.
Krissy Suckow (21 points) and Jen Walkling (19 rebounds, nine points) led the way for Fairleigh Dickinson.
The Seahawks complete their two-game homestand when they host Monmouth on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 4 pm.
NOTES: With her nine points, Gallagher now has 1,048 points and moves in front of from current SFNY coach Brenda Milano for 19th place on the all-time Seahawks scoring list ... Her two three pointers also give her 223 for her career, one away from Chris Anderson for second on the all-time Wagner list and 13 behind Susan Moffat for top honors.
