Staten Island, NY - Fairleigh Dickinson used a pair of 11-1 runs in the second half to push by host Wagner College in an 87-72 loss for the Seahawks earlier this afternoon. The outcome leaves Wagner at 10-9 overall and 3-7 in the Northeast Conference (NEC). FDU meanwhile improved to 12-8 overall and 9-2 in the NEC with its sixth straight win.
Wagner held a slim 49-48 lead with 15:24 left in the game when the Knights went on their first 11-1 spurt. The Seahawks missed all six shot attempts during the run which left the visitors ahead by nine, 59-50 with 11:24 to play. The Seahawks would come back strong as a three-point play by sophomore James Ulrich (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Camden Catholic) and a pair of free throws from sophomore Mark Porter (Atlantic City, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) put Wagner within five (67-62).
The deficit remained at five with just over five minutes remaining when FDU strung together another 11-1 stretch to salt the game away as they held an 80-65 lead with 3:00 minutes on the clock.
Junior Durell Vinson (Vineland, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) again led the Seahawks with his 10th double-double of the season. Vinson put up 23 points along with 15 rebounds to pace four double digit scorers for Wagner. Freshman Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD / Towson Catholic) had 13 points just ahead of Porter (12) and Ulrich (11). Senior DeEarnest McLemore (Cary. NC / Cary) handed out a career high 10 assists against just one turnover.
Chad Timberlake scored 18 second half points on his way to a game high 25 for FDU. Gordon Klaiber and Andrea Crosariol each added 16 points while Andre Harris put up 12 and Michael Peeples had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Wagner held a 43-36 lead in rebounds, but shot just 40.8 percent compared to a 50.8 showing for FDU. The Knights also hit 62.1 percent in the second half as they out scored Wagner 52-37.
The Seahawks started the game out solid using a quick 10-4 burst to open up a 29-22 lead with 5:21 to go before intermission. FDU however scored the next 11 points of the game to gain their first lead of the game at 33-29 just three minutes later. Porter and Vinson followed with consecutive baskets for the Seahawks to even the score before the teams headed in the locker room deadlocked at 35.
Next up for Wagner is a 7:00 pm home contest on Monday night against Monmouth. The game will be telecast live on the MSG Network.
