Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's water polo team split four games at the Princeton Invitational this past weekend in Princeton, NJ. On Saturday the Green & White fell to Bucknell 13-8 in the early game but then rebounded later in the day to knock off George Washington by a count of 12-3. On Sunday, Wagner started off the day on a bright note upending MAAC rival Villanova 9-4 but then losing later in the day to Maryland 12-10.
The Bucknell contest was a back and forth duel that saw the Seahawks leading by a goal after two periods. However, Bucknell would return with a spirited second half to take the victory 13-8. Senior Sara Kramer (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) and Junior Stacey Travous (New Ulm,MN/Cumberland Valley) scored two goals apiece in the losing effort, while freshman Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) had an impressive debut with a goal, assist, and steal to her credit.
In the late game the Wagner offense was firing on all cylinders as three players picked up hat tricks. Stacey Travous joined senior Courtney Crase (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga), and sophomore Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) in the three-goal department as the Seahawks went on to the 12-3 victory. Junior goalie Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) stopped seven of nine shots faced while freshman goalie Jennifer Anderson (Whittier, CA/La Serna) denied four shots in her debut.
Crase kept up her scoring assault as the games moved to Sunday. Crase deposited three more goals into the net and Stacey Travous added two as Wagner moved past Villanova 9-4. Corrine Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) dealt out three assists in the win. Hauck again was instrumental in the victory halting nine of thirteen wildcat shots.
The final game was a losing effort to the Terrapins of Maryland 12-10. Despite three goals by Kramer, two by Hoelck, and two by Stacey Travous it was not enough to pick up the victory. Junior transfer Natasha Peterson (Whittier, Ca/La Habra) added two goals in the defeat.
The Seahawks are next in action this weekend when they travel to Lewisburg, PA for the Bucknell Invitational. They are scheduled to take on the likes of Penn State Behrend, Slippery Rock, Hartwick, and a rematch with George Washington.
