Wagner Takes Third Place At NEC Championships

Staten Island, NY -- The Wagner College women's swim team wrapped up the Northeast Conference Championships with a third place finish, a position they held throughout the three day meet. Wagner finished with 499 points trailing Central Connecticut State (601) and now three-peat winner Gardner-Webb (742). Combined the Seahawks may have turned in their best performance on the last day of action with three second place finishes on the afternoon.

Things started well in the 800-yard freestyle relay where the team of Shannon Johnston (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep), Molly McDonald (Hickory, NC/Seton Home School), Jess Radka (Mohnton, PA/Holy Name), and Alyssa Montgomery (Yucaipa, CA/Redlands) combined for a second place time of 7:43.74 which was also an ECAC qualifying mark.

Not long after, in the 1650-yard freestyle, freshman Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) took second place honors at 17:05.83, while Johnston was not far behind in fourth place at 17:21.40. Both times were ECAC qualifying marks. In the 100-yard freestyle Montgomery was back in the pool and worked her way to a fifth place time at 53.42, which was also an ECAC qualifying time.

Senior Eileen Dowd (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) tacked on some more points in the 200-yard breaststroke when she tallied a fourth place finish at 2:26.80, which was good enough to be an ECAC qualifying time. Finally Radka, a top finisher in day two in the 100-yard butterfly came back in day three with a second place time in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:03.35. The time for Radka was also an ECAC qualifying time and knocked nearly a second and a half off her own school record. After She qualified for the United States Open Swimming Championships in the 100 yesterday, she accomplished the feet again in the 200, while just missing an invite (.15 seconds short) to the USA Swimming Spring National Championships.

This meet concludes Northeast Conference competition for the Seahawks, who achieved many personbal bests thoughtout the meet. Next up for those who qualify are the ECAC Championships which start this Thursday in Pittsburgh, PA.
