Hamden, CT - Wagner out scored Quinnipiac 42-24 in the second half to erase a 14 point deficit in a 64-60 win earlier today at Burt Kahn Court. The win ends a seven game losing streak for the Seahawks which improved to 11-13 overall and 4-11 in the Northeast Conference.
Despite shooting just 31.5 percent for the game, Wagner remained aggressive on offense by getting to the foul line for a season high 41 attempts. The Seahawks converted 28-41 from the line led by freshman Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD / Towson Catholic) who was 9-11 and led all scorers with 18 points.
Down 36-22 at half time, Wagner came out of the locker room with six unanswered points in the firs 2:20 of play. The Seahawks then used a 17-4 run over six minutes to take their first lead at 48-45 with 8:54 remaining. Junior Matt Vitale (Brooklyn, NY / St. Edmond's Prep) scored all of his eight points during the run, including the last six on a three point play that tied the game and a three-pointer for the lead.
Now back in the game Wagner held a 50-47 advantage following a DeEarnest McLemore (Cary, NC / Cary) lay-in with 8:17 left. Quinnipiac then went on a 10-2 run to take a 57-52 lead after a three from Craig Benson at the 3:57 mark.
The Seahawks would answer back with nine straight points, regaining the lead for good, 59-57, on a three point play from Smith with 2:10 left. The 9-0 stretch would put the Seahawks up by four 61-57 at 1:18 on the clock. After a cutting the deficit back to one, (61-60) sophomore Mark Porter (Atlantic City, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) made the second of two free throws for a two point lead, Smith finalized the scoring with a breakaway dunk following a pair of long three point attempts in the closing seconds for Quinnipiac.
Wagner shot just 19.2 percent in the first half making 5-26. The Seahawks held a 47-36 advantage in rebounding. McLemore ended the game with 11 points, while junior Durell Vinson (Vineland, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) was also in double figures with 10.
Adam Gonzalez led the home team with 14 points.
The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Fairleigh Dickinson for an 8:00 pm start.
