Seahawks Stopped at Purdue, 95-56

West Lafayette, IN - The Wagner College Seahawks two game winning streak was stopped at host Purdue University by a final of 95-56 this evening at Mackey Arena. Wagner falls to 4-7 on the season with the loss, while the Boilermakers, now 7-0 at home, moved to 9-2 on the year.

Purdue took an early 19-6 lead behind the inside presence of Carl Landry who had 11 points in the opening four minute stretch. The Seahawks then held a 14-6 advantage over the next seven minutes as they trailed by just five (25-20) with nine minutes to play before halftime. Wagner would fall behind by 10 three times in the next five minutes before a three from sophomore Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS / Olathe East) and a pair of free throws from freshmen Michael Orock (Hoboken, NJ / Hoboken) cut the deficit to five once again.

Unfortunately Mundweiler's three which came with four minutes left was the last field goal of the half for Wagner. The Boilermaker defensive pressure forced three turnovers in the final four minutes as they closed the half on an 11-0 run for a 53-35 lead at intermission.

In the second half the Wagner offense went to the wayside as the team managed just 21 points while shooting 34.8 percent (8-23) from the field. Following an alley-op layin by junior Mark Porter (Atlantic, City, NJ / St. Augustine's Prep) from junior James Ulrich (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Camden Catholic) to open the half, Purdue went on a 14-4 run to open the game up. The margin extended to as many as 40 (91-51) before the final outcome.

Sophomore Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD / Towson Catholic) led the way with 15 points. Mundweiler was also in double figures with 10 as was Porter who added six rebounds and five assists.

The 95 points mark the most given up in a non-conference game by Wagner since a 97-85 loss at then #11 UCONN on December 7, 2002.

Wagner, which has lost three straight on the road, shot 39.6 percent for the game and was out rebounded 37-28. Purdue held a 23-4 advantage in points off turnovers, as they ended the game shooting 54.7 percent.

Landry ended his night with a game high 26 points in 22 minutes while David Teague would chip 15 points.

Wagner continues the Indiana trip on Thursday when they travel south to Terre Haute fro a 7:05 pm contest at Indiana St.
