New York, NY - The Wagner offense was non-existent for the second-straight game as the Seahawks (1-7) saw their losing streak hit five, dropping a 66-46 decision to Columbia (3-7) at Levien Gym earlier tonight in non-conference action.
Junior Chelsey Bunyer (Shannon IL / Eastland) led the Green & White with a game-high 15 points on 7-14 shooting to go along with five rebounds and four steals. Senior Takesha Dye (Boynton Beach, FL / Daytona Beach C.C.) also had a solid game with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Wagner shot just 35.7 percent (20-56) and failed to hit a three pointer, going 0-8 from behind the arc, while the Lions hit just 39.7 percent (23-58) but managed to drill eight three pointers. Columbia also won the battle of the boards (42-36) and the turnover-battle (22-27).
The game was even early on as the score was tied at 10-10 with 12:19 to go in the half. The Lions then scored five straight points to go up 15-10. The Lions would extend their lead to nine at 23-14 with 8:41 to go in the half. The Seahawks would counter with layups from freshman Naomi Augustin (Valley Stream, NY / Valley Stream Central) and Dye to cut it to 23-18 with 6:54 to go. However the Seahawks failed to dent the scoreboard over the next 9:16 while the Lions broke the game open with 11straight points to go up 34-18 with 18:12 to go in the game. Wagner would cut it to 12 on three separate occasions before Columbia broke the game wide-open with a 19-4 run over 5:59 to go up by their largest lead of game at 58-31 with 7:22 to go on their way to an easy 66-46 win.
Wagner will now head home for a few days before making the short trip to New Rochelle, NY to take on Iona on Dec. 17 at 2 pm.
NOTES: Wagner failed to hit a three pointer for the first time since their 46-40 win over Manhattan on Dec. 1, 2001, a span of 141 games ... Wagner has now lost 18-straight games in the month of December, last winning on Dec. 28, 2003 at Manhattan 67-58 ... Bunyer led Wagner in scoring for the third time this year while Dye paced the rebounding unit for the seventh time.
