Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College Seahawks were handed a 45-9 defeated by visiting Stony Brook in Northeast Conference player earlier today. The Seahawks have now lost six straight as the slide to 4-6 overall and 0-6 in the NEC. The Seawolves meanwhile won for the fifth time in six games while jumping to 5-5 overall and 5-1 in the NEC.
Junior Jason Butler (Syracuse, NY / Henninger) accounted for 193 all purpose yards for the Seahawks, but was out done by Stony Brook quarterback Josh Dudash who threw for 393 yards by completing 27 of 34 attempts and one touchdown. Von Bryant added three 2-yard scoring runs for the Seawolves.
Stony Brook wasted little time getting on the board scoring on the first possession of the game on a 2 yard run by Bryant to take the early 7-0 lead. The TD run was set up by a 43 yard reception from Lynell Suggs that but the Seawolves down inside the five yard line.
The lead for Stony Brook blossomed to 14-0 early in the second quarter on another 2 yard run from Bryant. Dwayne Eley made a diving catch on a 51 yard pass from Dudash that brought the Seawolves down inside the 10 yard line to set up the score.
Butler then answered the door for Wagner delivering a 91 yard kickoff return for a touchdown cutting he deficit to 14-6 following a missed extra point by the Seahawks. Butler return was the first kickoff returned for a score by a Wagner player since Mark Jepson took one back on October 25, 2003 at Robert Morris. The score was the first touchdown for the Seahawks in the last nine quarters of play.
The Seawolves marched down the field on their next possession extending the lead to 21-6 after a 12 yard touchdown reception by Suggs.
Following a tipped interception by Adam Cooper, Stony Brook drove the field again as Bryant capped off a 7 play 59 yard drive with his third 2 yard touchdown run of the game and a 28-6 advantage.
In the second half junior Piotr Czech (Keyport, NJ / Keyport) knocked in a 41 yard field goal on the Seahawks opening drive to bring the count to 28-9 five minutes into the third quarter. A 28 yard field goal by Matt Weeks with under a minute remaining in the third period then put Stony Brook back on top 31-9.
At the start of the fourth quarter Steve Austin extended the lead to 38-9 with a one yard touchdown run for Stony Brook. Aaron Hale would make it 45-9 in the fourth quarter after finding the end zone with an 11 yard scoring run.
Wagner was out gained by Stony Brook 522-148 and trailed 38:35-21:25 in time of possession. The Seawolves were able to build up the 28-6 halftime advantage after completing 8-10 on third down conversions.
Leading the defensively for Wagner was senior Ein Wlliams (Neptune, NJ / Neptune) with 16 tackles (five solo). Senior Thomas Larsen (Brooklyn, NY / Poly Prep) added 13 stops and a pass break up. The loss was the first ever by the Seahawks at home to Stony Brook. Wagner was previously 6-0 at home in the series.
The Seahawks close out the season next week at Saint Francis in a 1:00 pm start.
