Nov. 17, 2006

Box Score

DURHAM, NH - One year after getting blown out at home against New Hampshire, the Seahawks gave the Wildcats everything they could handle before falling by an 80-70 score earlier tonight at Lundholm Gym. Senior forward Takesha Dye (Boynton Beach, FL / Daytona Beach CC) was a force to be reckoned with as she posted career highs in points (11) and rebounds (15) to pace four double-figure scorers for the Green & White.

With the win New Hampshire evens their record at 1-1 while the Seahawks remain winless at 0-2.

Wagner shot the ball extremely well hitting at a 46.6 percent-clip (27-58) while eclipsing the 70-point barrier for the first time since their 79-66 win over SFNY on Jan. 24, 2004, snapping their streak of sub 70-point games at 65. The Green & White also won the battle of the turnovers (11-13) and in the process committed their fewest turnovers since Jan. 3, 2002 - a span of 129 games- at Quinnipiac.

Despite the many positives UNH managed to connect on 41.7 percent of their shots, aided in part by their 46-31 advantage on the boards, including 22-10 on the offensive end, which led to 21 second chance points for the Wildcats compared to 12 for the Seahawks.

Freshmen John'a Poole (Middle River, NY / Eastern Tech), Andrea Reed (Pocomoke City, MD / Pocomoke) and Naomi Augustin (Valley Stream, NY / Valley Stream Central) combined for 22 points on 11-20 shooting to give Wagner a real spark. Poole hit for 15 points, including 13 in the first half, on 6-10 shooting to go along with three steals in 31 minutes. Reed had the first eight points of her career and a team-best five assists in 25 minutes off the bench.

Lost in the shuffle was junior Chelsey Bunyer's (Shannon, IL / Eastland) team-high 16 points on 6-12 shooting. Sophomore Olivia Nagle (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.

The Seahawks came out hot shooting a blistering 50 percent (15-30) in the first stanza and went into the half trailing only 40-37. In the second half, Wagner raced out of the gates on a 7-4 run to take the lead 44-43 with 15:57 remaining. UNH wrestled the lead back with a 6-0 run only to see Wagner answer back with six unanswered points of their own on baskets by Nagle, Bunyer and Dye to go up 50-49 with 12:13 remaining.

However that would be the last lead of the night for the Seahawks. With the score tied at 52 apiece the Wildcats would outscore Wagner 15-4 over the next 5:11 to go up for good at 66-56 with 5:47 remaining on their way to an 80-70 win.

Danielle Clark led five double-figure scorers for the Wildcats with 17 points to go with a team-best nine rebounds.

The Green & White are next in action on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 pm in their home-opener against Lafayette at 7:00 pm.
