Boston, MA -- The Wagner College women's swim team is in seventh place after two days of competition at the Boston University Invite. The Green & White have currently totaled 263 points with one day of competition remaining tomorrow.
With so many colleges and swimmers invovled in this meet, individual events are often divided up into "A", "B", and "C" final heats with "A" being the top heat. Qualification into the better final heat is based on preliminary times.
Yesterday's festivities were started off with the 500 yard freestyle where sophomore Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) nailed down third place with a time of 5:04.63. Right behind Tomlinson was the duo of Kate Wilson (Brentwood, CA/Liberty) and Brigitta Roser (Ithaca, NY/Lansing) in fourth and fifth place with times of 5:05.26 and 5:06.24. Roser continues her amazing senior season posting a lifetime best mark in this event. Wagner continued to pick up points in this race as Colleen Bowman (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) came in seventh place at 5:08.84 while freshman Melanie Rodriguez-Lapman (Chesire, CT/Chesire) was in ninth place at 5:07.26 but did win her heat. Bowman's time as well was a personal best.
After that, junior Jess Radka (Mohnton, PA/Holy Name) grabbed 10th overall in the 200 IM clocking a time of 21:11.36. That was followed by Molly McDonald (Hickory, NC/Seton Home School) adding to the scoring by taking 16th in the 50 freestyle at 25.27. Halley Allen (Bryan,TX/Bryan) just missed out on scoring points in the 50 freestyle by landing in 17th place overall at 25:0, but winning her overall race, the "C" heat.
Day 2 was kickstarted earlier today when Wagner took seventh in the 200 yard medley relay. The quartet of Radka, McDonald, Allen, and Nicole Paduano (North Haven, CT/North Haven) stopped the clock at 1:51.84. The Seahawks then picked up some quality points in the 400 yard IM. Rodriguez-Lapman took first in the "B" final and eighth place overall at a time of 4:37.04. Julie Gardner (Concord, CA/Concord) wasn't too far behind in 13th place at 4:45.21.
Radka came back in the 200 yard butterfly winning the "B" final and sliding into ninth overall at 57.99.
The highlight of the event so far may be Brigitta Roser's performance in the 200 yard freestyle. Roser absolutely obliterated the Wagner school record in this event by cruising through the water at a time of 1:52.94 which was good for third place. Tomlinson wasn't too far off the pace in seventh place with a time of 1:57.97. Wagner also picked up some points in the 100 yard breaststroke as Paduano took 11th place at 1:10.84.
Wagner closed out the day with a solid effort in the 800 yard freestyle relay. The group of Roser, Tomlinson, McDonald, and Bowman worked their way to fifth place at 7:53.93.
