Wagner Picks up First Win of the Season at UMES, 82-76

Princess Anne, MD - The Wagner men's basketball team traveled south in search of their first win of the season and the Seahawks accomplished just that picking up an 82-76 victory over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Seahawks moved their season record to 1-2 overall, while UMES fell in their first contest of the season to start out 0-1.

Juniors Mark Porter (St. Augustine's Prep / Atlantic City, NJ) (21 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists) and James Ulrich (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Camden Catholic) (18 points, 14 rebounds) led five players in double figures for the Seahawks.

Trailing 43-36 a few minutes into the second half, sophomore Jamal Smith (Baltimore, MD / Towson Catholic) scored seven straight points to set off a 14-1 run that put Wagner up 50-44 with 14 minutes to play. UMES would cut the lead to four, twice in the next couple of minutes, but the Seahawks offensive fire power kept them at bay.

Wagner took the lead to as many as 14 (73-59) after consecutive driving lay-ups from Porter with 1:30 remaining, before holding off a final late rally from the Hawks.

Porter helped seal the game down the stretch making 6-8 free throws in the final 35 seconds and ended 11-16 from the foul line.

Smith finished the game with 14 points, 12 in the second half and four assists, as sophomore Joey Mundweiler (Olathe, KS / Olathe East) also added 14 points behind four three pointers. Sophomore Justin Drummond (Baltimore, MD / McDonough) rounded out the double figures scorers with 10 points.

Corey Brown who had 18 points and four threes at halftime for UMES was held to five second half points but led all scorers with 23 points. Jesse Brooks added 20 points in the loss.

The first half was close when a three by Mundweiler put the Seahawks up six (32-26) with less then four minutes to play before intermission. From there the Hawks closed the first 20 minutes on a 10-0 run before a pair of free throws from Porter in the final seconds left Wagner down 36-34 at halftime.

Wagner shot 55.2 percent in the second half to end the game at 50 percent from the field. The Seahawks shot just 66.7 percent from the foul line but connected on 22-33 compared to 10-20 for UMES. The Hawks shot 42.6 for the game and made just 1-10 from three in the second half after a 7-19 performance in the first stanza.

Wagner held a 43-38 advantage in rebounding, including the career high 14 from Ulrich who produced his first career double-double.

The Seahawks end the three game road swing on Monday at William & Mary before returning to Staten Island for a November 25 game vs Vermont.
