Baltimore, MD -- The Wagner College swim team was back in action earlier today down in Baltimore as they did battle with UMBC and the University of New Hampshire. The Green & White came up on the short end of the proverbial stick against both teams falling to Maryland-Baltimore County 142-80 and 135-95 to New Hampshire. This meet did however serve as a solid tuneup for the Seahawks next meet which will be the Boston University Invite.
As for this meet things started off slow for the Seahawks. After finishing fourth in the opening 400 yard medley relay, Wagner came back strong in the 1000 yard freestyle as Melanie Rodriguez-Lapman (Chesire, CT/Chesire) and Colleen Bowman (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) took second and third place with times of 10:36.71 and 10:40.57. Sophomore Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) came up with a fourth place itme in the next event, the 200 yard freestyle, hitting the wall at 1:59.45. Senior Brigitta Roser (Ithaca, NY/Lansing) continued to swim well getting a hold of third place in the 50 yard freestyle at 25.41.
Event five brought up the 200 yard IM and junior Jess Radka (Mohnton, PA/Holy Name) tallied a fourth place finish, stopping the clock at 2:13.98. Tomlinson returned to chlorinated water for the 200 yard butterfly where she just missed out on first place with a time of 2:09.95. Meanwhile Roser showed up in the next event acquiring third place in the 100 yard freestyle via a 54.66 time. Skipping ahead a few events to the 500 yard freestyle and Tomlinson garnered another second place with a time of 5:10.41 while senior Kate Wilson (Brentwood, CA/Liberty) was not far behind in third at a time of 5:14.70. Wilson then tallied the lone solo first place of the day for Wagner obtaining top honors in the 200 yard breaststroke just edging Evelyn Yuen of New Hampshire with a time of 2:31.84, which thwarted the efforts of Yuen, who posted a time of 2:31.96.
The final event of the meet was the 400 yard freestyle which the Seahawks technically won with a time of 3:48.86. However both UMBC and UNH elected to swim that event unofficially.
Wagner now has a little downtime before they return to competition on November 17 when they travel to Beantown, aka, Boston for the Boston University Invite for a three day swimming extravaganza.
