NEW BRITAIN, CT - Wagner gave Central Connecticut State all they could handle before losing to the Blue Devils 3-1 by scores of 30-25, 26-30, 30-26, 30-17 earlier today at Detrick Gym. With the loss, Wagner falls to 6-19 and 1-3 in Northeast Conference play while CCSU improves to 16-7 and 4-1 in the NEC.
The Blue Devils outhit the Seahawks .238-.125 and were helped out by 15 total blocks, compared to just five for the Green & White.
The Seahawks started strong and hung with tough with Blue Devils in the first game and were tied at 23 before CCSU used a late 7-2 run to win 30-25. In the second game, CCSU looked to be in command going up 18-14 before Wagner ripped off a 16-8 surge, fueled by three kills apiece from senior Kerry Krohn (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) and sophomore Brandy Barnett (Claremont, CA / St. Lucy's Priory), to win 30-26. The Seahawks were riding a wave of momentum and were up 21-17 in the third game, before the Blue Devils closed out the game with a 13-5 run to win 30-26 and wrestle the momentum back from Wagner. It was all CCSU in the fourth game as the Blue Devils won 30-17.
Barnett led the way for Wagner with 17 kills, on .265 hitting, to go along with 19 digs while Krohn also had a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs. Freshman Gabi Hilk (Wilmington, DE / Alexis I. DuPont) paced the setting unit with 43 assists and sophomore Sirena LaBurn (Port Neches, TX / Port Neches) rounded out the top performers for Wagner with a game-high 20 digs.
The Seahawks will next play at Sacred Heart tomorrow at 4 pm in a rematch of Wagner's thrilling five-set win earlier in the year.
